September 23, 2023 - February 8, 2024 - Bounce Back

Word got out. The August 6th concert was postponed. Students defected from the program, probably because of my health. But we had picked up Ralph Watson from the Fernando Pullam Center last spring, and Kristian Fabian from Ramon Cortines in the fall. (Michael Gasparik called me to come in and pitch again.)

A photo collage of hexagons with all of the 2023-2024 mentors including: Akira, Jonathan, Tommy, Rebecca, Eiko, Austin, Igofr, Maksim, Jennifer Wu (new viola mentor), Genevieve, Justin, Ralph, Ashley, Javier, Kristina, Emer, and Jonathan Stehney.

While we had a smaller cohort of composers, programming was tight. It made sense. Mentors were coming in in the right all-the-instruments-of-the-orchestra order.

The biggest addition was Tommy Faragher joining us as a regular contributor. I still ask how and why, and realize how lucky we are to get to work with him consistently.

Things started to change this cohort. With a team I trusted, I started not being there every Saturday. In fact, I think we only had a handful of workshops with everyone on it.

Although we had announced we would postpone the concert to Feb 18th, I was still recovering and not up for raising money. After cancelling again, the next day we decided we could do a huge recording session with an ensemble of 22 players with every instrument of the orchestra.

We were ambitious, lucky, and dumb.
